GREAT FALLS -

A new egg-grading facility is being built in Great Falls.

Workers recently broke ground on the $6.6 million plant along the east side of 38th Street North between 10th Avenue North and River Drive.

The facility is being built for Montana Egg LLC and will be able to grade, sort, and ship more than 280 million eggs each year.

Thirty Hutterite colonies have partnered with Costco stores in Montana and Washington to provide cage-free, organic eggs.

The colonies currently have more than 8,000 hens laying eggs for Wilcox Family Farm, but this added contract will mean more hens and more eggs.

The Hutterite colony will need to have about 45,000 egg-laying hens, which will provide about 280 million eggs annually.

The eggs will be graded, sorted, packaged, and shipped out from Great Falls.

Jolene Schalper of the Great Falls Development Authority said that the facility will employ about 20 full-time workers: "Which is great because it definitely adds to what they have now. They are adding the jobs, they are state of the art so they are good jobs. The construction jobs are fantastic during the process, and we're also really excited about the tax revenue that a $6.6 million dollar facility will add to the city's budget."
