GREAT FALLS -

Members and friends of the Little Shell Tribe gathered in Great Falls on Thursday to celebrate business owners and programs within the community.

The event was held at the tribe's community center at 1529 Stuckey Road off of the Northwest Bypass.

The event honored six tribal business owners receiving Montana Indian Equity Fund grants over the years.

The Fund has given nearly $1 million to more than 130 business owners since 2007.

The ceremony also honored the Little Shell Language Program, which aims to bring back the three original languages of the Chippewa.

The program has developed a full curriculum for Head Start programs, but they say partnering with schools in and around Great Falls is the next step, along with continued funding from the state.

"If it's not funded, I don't know where we're going to find the resources to move it on through the school system, and we have to depend on the school system because the Little Shell does not have their own school," said Little Shell Language Program Organizer Gerald J. Gray Sr.

The Little Shell Language Program has also produced resource guides for the three languages original languages- Chippewa, Cree and Michif - along with early learning materials and learning games.
