"Giving Tuesday" underway

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Following the post-Thanksgiving shopping days all about the deals, the focus shifts to helping others on "Giving Tuesday."

According to GivingTuesday.org, the global initiative kicks off the charitable season and is fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

Now in its fifth year, the movement has thousands of organizations involved in more than 70 countries.

Community members can participate through donating time or money.

Organizations in our community include Big Brothers-Big Sisters, CASA-CAN, Ursuline Centre Historical Foundation, Maclean Animal Adoption Center, Family Connections Montana, and more.

Click here to find a list of participating organizations if you'd like to help.

The Giving Tuesday website states:

Givers are happier than non-givers. And happy people can help spread good giving news.

• People who give money to charity are 43 percent more likely than nongivers to say they are “very happy” about their lives. Volunteers are 42 percent more likely to be very happy than non-volunteers. (Source: Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey)

• People who give money are 34 percent less likely than non-givers to say they feel “so sad that nothing could cheer them up.” They are also 68 percent less likely to feel “hopeless” and 24 percent less likely to say “everything is an efort.” (Source: University of Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics)
