GREAT FALLS -

Special Olympics Montana kicked off its regional spring games Thursday in Great Falls at the Great Falls High School Memorial Stadium, with teams traveling from around north and central Montana to compete.

Event organizers say athletes spend months training for the Special Olympics Montana CMR Area Spring Games.

"It's a day to celebrate the athletes' accomplishments through their hard work and practice," said SOMT event volunteer Michael Jenkins.

Over the two-day event, athletes put their best foot forward at sporting events ranging from track and field to gymnastics competitions.

For some athletes, the reason to train goes beyond the competition.

"Unfortunately, my dad passed away - now I do it for him," said SOMT athlete Jennifer Bodner.

Athletes say while one of their favorite things to do is compete against other Olympians, they say the event allows them to enjoy a day with family, friends, and the community.

"Last year it was all rainy, so it's nice to be out in the sunshine today and spend some time together," said SOMT Sunburst Team Coach Jodi Griffin.

"Be with our friends, coaches, we have the best coaches ever, yes we do," said SOMT athletes Tim Detmers, Brandy Bauer and Amie Bartell.

The Special Olympics Montana CMR spring games wrap up Friday with sporting events ranging from aquatics and kayaking to gymnastics and golf.

All athletes from Thursday's games qualify to compete in the SOMT State Summer Games in Missoula May 16 - 19.
