We have received multiple reports that there is a large police presence on the east side of Great Falls.

The incident appears to be focused near Central Avenue and 42nd Street, near East Middle School.

Some people have posted on the KRTV Facebook page:

  • David Heatherly: "Something big going on in the upper end of Central Avenue and 42nd Street probably have a dozen cop cars 2 fire trucks not sure what it is."
  • Rebecca Morgan: "Cops are blocking roads and we just saw an ambulance and another cop car."
  • Lindsay Juneau: "Any idea what's going on by East?? Cops ALL OVER at the apartments down the street from there."

We have also received reports that some parts of the area have been blocked off to traffic.

We do not yet know what has triggered the response, but have received unconfirmed reports that some people heard at least one gunshot.

The Great Falls Police Department has not yet released any information.

A reporter is headed to the scene now; we will update you as we get more details.

UPDATE: At least one person was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

The incident happened at an apartment building on the 4200 block of Central Avenue.

UPDATE: Great Falls Police Chief David Bowen said that two officers were called to disturbance at about 9:45 p.m. between a man and a woman at the apartment.

The man had a weapon and refused to comply with officer's commands.

One of the officers shot the man, wounding him.

The man was taken to Benefis Health System for treatment of his injuries and is reported to be in "stable" condition.

The woman was taken to Benefis for treatment of the injuries she sustained in the altercation with the man.

Chief Bowen has requested that the Department of Criminal Investigation of the Montana Department of Justice conduct the investigation into the incident, as is standard when an officer is involved in a shooting.

Authorities have not yet released the names of any of the people involved.

We will update you as we get more information.
