BOZEMAN -

John Simms was a fishing guide in Jackson, Wyoming in the 1980's. He made a couple of simple products to make life easier for some of his customers.

In 1993, the entire operation moved to Bozeman, and Simms Fishing Products was born.

Simms now employs 170 people, including 50 in manufacturing.

Simms prides itself on attention to detail, from assuring very little waste in materials when new waders are cut, to ensuring that each seem is sealed, and inventing machines to help achieve that.

Diane Bristol, the Director of Employee & Community Engagement, explained, "The thought of having people that were making the waders and marketing it and doing customer service all being anglers was really attractive, and then having all of these great field testers right here with so many professional fishing guides was really a great spot to get product feedback and input, test out products, if we try something we can get out on the river right away."

She noted, "It goes from concept to commercialization here in Bozeman, Montana, and getting the right people and having a great team is really, really important to us."

Bristol said, "When we moved in five years ago we had about 62,000 square feet, and last year we added another 15,000, so we continue to be in one building but we're pushing the limit."
