BILLINGS -

An 87-year-old U.S. Marine Corps. veteran received a special surprise on Saturday.

Jerry Scherer was gifted back a fully-restored Jeep that he had originally owned after he got out of the service.

Seventeen years ago Scherer bought the unfinished 1945 Willys Military Jeep after his wife passed away.

A number of setbacks, including theft and Scherers ability to work on the Jeep, kept him from finishing the project.

Scherer’s son enlisted the help of Magic City 4x4 and other members of the Billings community.

Friends and family presented the Jeep to Scherer at the Billings Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in the Heights.

There was also a parade of military vehicles and more modern Jeeps to celebrate the occasion.

The spirit of neighbors helping neighbors was on full display.

"Anyone that we asked for help was right there to help out, and it's great. It shows the community what you can do, and it's really neat to see these older guys that didn't get thanks when they came home to finally get that," said Jerry Scherer Jr.

"He's 87. We don't know how how much longer he is going to be with us. And we have the iconic Jeep that he gets to pass on to his family, so we hope it inspires other people to thank the vets around.  We don't know what they have done for us, except that we even in this country," said Vernon Vall.

"I worked on these before. I was in tanks in the Marine Corps, but we had these also.  It really surprised me!" said Jerry Scherer.

Jerry Scherer added that the carburetor still needs a little fine tuning, but said today was like Christmas.
