GREAT FALLS -

Interested gardeners gathered at the Westside Orchard Garden in Great Falls on Saturday to enjoy the weather while attending the seventh annual "Gardens From Garbage Fresh Air Forum."

Orchard Caretakers and Master Gardeners learned about ways they could make the most of the summer growing season.

The classes offered included Tree and Shrub Maintenance, Wild Foraging, Natural Pest Management, and Drip Irrigation for Home Gardens.

One certified arborist was there to teach the gardeners how to properly prune trees and woody ornamental shrubs.

Master Gardener, Ken Roberts explained: “Trees especially, that’s my passion, do so much for us in the environ; they clean the air, they provide us shade, they provide us beauty, and they provide us fruit, they provide a habitat for birds, small animals. So from that aspect I think trees, shrubbery, landscaping in general are so important to our life.”

The Westside Orchard provides fresh produce to Great Falls organizations including the Boys and Girls Club and Meals on Wheels.

The garden also provides a summer gardening educational program to area kids from the Boys & Girls Club,  Salvation Army, and the Great Falls Rescue Mission.

Westside Orchard Garden is located at 400 16th Street SW.

Sunburst Unlimited, Inc., dba Gardens from Garbage, grew out of a recognized need for sustainability - for the vitality of our environment and our communities. Our current food system relies heavily on transporting food grown in distant environments, which results in fuel consumption and reliance on an unsustainable system. Instead, we teach others how to grow food by nourishing what we have in our community and connecting with others who are doing the same.
