Shooting Championship underway at Great Falls Shooting Sports Complex

Posted: Updated:

The "wild west" has returned to the Great Falls area this weekend at the Great Falls Shooting Sports Complex.

July 14, 15, 16 gunmen and women are competing in the Montana State SASS Cowboy Action Shooting Championship. There are 85 shooters in the running, their goal is for the best time throughout all of the events.

There are 12 events with 25 shots in each event. Each miss is a five second penalty and shooting targets in the wrong order is a 10 second penalty.

Organizers said because the targets are fairly large and close, everyone can get involved.

"It enables somebody that's kinda a novice to come out and they may not be real fast, but they will be able to hit most of the targets. And the other thing is, a lot of these people grew up in the 50s and the 60s, the cowboy era, and we just like play cowboys and Indians with real guns," said Dave Farris, event organizer.

Shooters competing have to use an alias, Dave Farris goes by Jeb Stuart.

To win at the state level the shooter must be a Montana resident.

The person with the fastest overall time gets a belt buckle and free entry into the regional competition.
