Helena Flying Tigers hosted a model plane competition on Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Remote-controlled model airplanes filled the sky in East Helena on Saturday morning as the Helena Flying Tigers held a friendly competition.

The Helena Flying Tigers is an academy of model aeronautics. Members flew their carbon fiber planes in a loop in the hope of taking the best time.

Some of the model airplanes had a wingspan of four meters while a few were bought and others handmade.

According to Helena Flying Tigers members Greg Douglas and Curtis Suter, anyone who has an interest in soaring model planes or who wants to learn how are welcome.

"I like the camaraderie, you come out here with your friends and you are flying," Douglas said. "I think all of us out here are very competitive, that's what I like about it."

Suter added that the competitions are the friendliest a person can find as everyone tries to help maximize a person's flight.
