Montana firefighters and equipment from 14 separate city, county, rural, and volunteer fire departments are now in Southern California.
Chief Rich Cowger of the Columbus Fire Department sent three firefighters to assist.
He said the Montana crews were in the process of checking in with officials on Friday to learn where they'll be assigned.
Cowger added that the Montana firefighters will be grouped into strike teams with 5 engines and their own supervisor.
"That strike team leader will then coordinate all the efforts of that strike team in with the bigger picture of the incident going on down there," he said.
Cowger expects the Montana crews will remain in California for the next couple of weeks.
With conditions permitting, the crews are expected back home a few days before Christmas.
