BUTTE - Butte's annual ice sculpting competition brought in some artists who literally stay cool under pressure.

About 30 artists chipped and scraped at large blocks of ice throughout Saturday morning and created various ice sculptures outside of businesses in uptown Butte.

The contest included rookie and master sculptors from around Butte and the state such as Brian McKinney from Great Falls, who carved a Christmas bear.

“What I enjoy most is that it's art for the moment," McKinney said. "You carve it and it melts away and it's just living on in memories and pictures."

It was the 17th year for the free ice sculpting event, which started in an effort to draw people to shop locally in uptown Butte.
