MHP encourages safe driving during the holidays

Posted: Dec 21, 2017 4:26 PM Updated:

The Montana Highway Patrol is encouraging people to be safe and responsible while traveling during the holiday season.

MHP says that the roads are extremely bad right now due to ice and snow, and ask people to drive safe and plan ahead for extra time when traveling.

Since Tuesday, MHP troopers have responded to more than 50 crashes and slide-offs just in Jefferson County and Lewis & Clark counties.

Trooper Brandon Uhl says that it’s always better to get there late, than not get there at all.

“When it’s snowing like this you definitely need to make sure and watch your speed, keeping your space, and making sure you’re giving yourself time and distance to react to whatever may happen on the road,” says Uhl.

Drivers should also expect to see increased law enforcement patrols looking for impaired or distracted driving.

AAA will again be offering their Tipsy Tow service this year and is available starting Sunday, December 24 and will run through Monday, January 1, 2018.

Tipsy Tow provides a free ride home and vehicle tow for up to 10 miles. This service does not include roadside assistance.

To use the service call 1-800-AAA-HELP (1-800-222-4357) and say that you need a Tipsy Tow.

Tipsy Tow is only available in Montana in: Helena (includes East Helena & Montana City), Kalispell/Whitefish, Livingston, Missoula, Billings, Bozeman (includes Belgrade), Hamilton and Polson.
