Medical History Conference of the West focuses on opioids and addiction

Montana State University held its 18th annual Medical History Conference of the West on Friday at the Museum of the Rockies.

MSU's WWAMI Medical Education Programs hosts the conference every year and the focus this year was on opioids and addiction.

The free public event, titled “Our Age of Anxiety: Opioids, addiction and the flight from reality – the tradition of ‘Do no harm,’” offered a variety of presentations.

Director Martin Teintze said the event is specifically for MSU medical students who will have to write prescriptions in the future.

He added that although prescription drugs can be misused, they are a critical drug in treating chronic pain.

“They are also an important drug for the management of pain that physicians need to be able to use," he said. "So we have to find the right balance between using it responsibly and not allowing it to become an addictive drug."

The event concluded with a reception in the lobby of the Museum of the Rockies.
