(BILLINGS) A 20-year old man was rushed to a hospital Tuesday morning after his car became wedged under the side of a semi trailer.

The crash happened at around 7 a.m. on Regal Street near the intersection of Monad Road.

Sgt. Shane Winden of the Billings Police Department said the man appeared to have sustained a head injury and a broken leg, and that the man's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The crash happened when the car was heading west on Monad. Instead of stopping behind a pickup truck that was stopped at the intersection, Winden said, the car went around the pickup and drove into the side of the semi trailer, which was driving through the middle of the intersection and had the right of way.

The driver of the semi told officers he heard a noise and felt the truck driving improperly when he looked in his side mirror and saw a car under the trailer.

Winden said the semi driver will not receive any citations.

Since the vehicle didn't have any impact to the bumpers, the air bags did not deploy.

The Billings Fire Department had to extricate the driver and remove him through the car's hatchback.

The semi trailer had to be lifted to remove the vehicle.

Officers plan on talking to the driver to find out why he didn't stop at the intersection.

Traffic was diverted in the area for a short time.
