GREAT FALLS — Volunteers of all ages joined United Way in Great Falls on Friday for the organization's annual Day Of Caring, cleaning up homes for those who can’t do so for themselves.

About 80 people participated in the event, splitting into teams to tackle projects for 50 elderly and disabled homeowners.

Volunteers from several organizations helped out, including: ADF, Benefis Health System, Centene, Kairos Youth Services, Montana Credit Union, Northwest Farm Credit Services, Scheels, and Malmstrom Air Force Base.

One Benefis team of school-age kids, adults, and retirees put their hands to work, filling up seven bags worth of fallen leaves.

Valley View Elementary School sixth-grader Blake Larson didn’t have school today, and devoted his day off to those in need: “I enjoy doing service anyway and it's just nice to meet new people and go out and help."

Community volunteers Gerry and Chuck Jennings are dedicated United Way volunteers and eagerly joined in today’s events.

“We both think that volunteerism is a really important part of living in any community. This is an example of volunteerism and we hope that people follow that example,” Jennings said.

By mid-day the volunteers had improved dozens of yards - and even more lives.
