This week’s One Class At a Time recipient is Mountain View Elementary School 3rd grade teacher Angie Schei.

Schei says she plans to purchase escape room materials for her class.

Students will have to answer a series of questions based on what they’ve learned in order to advance to the next clue, using their knowledge to “escape the classroom”.

The workshops will provide common core aligned programs that utilize students’ knowledge in English, Math and Science.

She says escape classroom programs increase student retainment when it comes to learning all in a fun and interactive way.

C.M. Russell High School Resource Teacher Laura Cline says her One Class At a Time grant is already making a difference in her classroom.

Cline was able to purchase more programs for Gimkit, an online research tool that can be applied to a number of subjects.

Students say they enjoy the extra support it provides especially in areas like math.

“We learned about whole numbers, integers and real numbers, irrational and rational, – we do all that on the Gimkit,” said student Brien Wobick

Cline says Gimkit’s programs individualize lessons for students and create learning materials for both small and large groups to utilize class time.

Wobick says before purchasing Gimkit, they were learning from a book. She prefers using Gimkit and utilizing the learning tools in the programs.

“It gives you the definitions of like whole numbers and everything and the book doesn’t- it just gives us problems so it (Gimkit) helps us more,” said Wobick.

Cline says students’ scores are improving due to the instant feedback they get through the programs.

“We started this about three weeks ago, and I’ve already seen improvement with their homework, because they’re able to view what they’re doing incorrectly right away, it’s instant feedback, that way they don’t have to make the same mistake over and over again,” she said.

Cline also says Gimkit provides individualized reports for each student’s learning progress over the year.
