HELENA — The Helena Area Habitat for Humanity celebrated International Women Build Week by inviting woman-volunteers for a day of building houses for future homeowners.

“It’s really an indescribable thing that Habit has given me. Not only to make my dream come true but also to put in the work to do it myself,” says Kacy Johnson, a Habitat for Humanity homeowner.

The Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit. Their goal is to provide housing to those who are struggling to find a place to live.

“There’s nothing in the market for what I could afford as a single parent years of two. So, I was just stuck in this cycle of working harder, the market would go up, working harder, the market would go up. My realtor actually directed me to Habit and I’m forever grateful to her because that led me here,” says Johnson.

There are 70 volunteers helping to build 6 homes doing tasks ranging from flooring to painting.

“I’m here to bring empowerment and confidence to women because I know some girls my age don't know how to use a hammer so I figured, let’s do something about that,” says Emma Piskolich, a volunteer.

Even our very own Helena Daybreak crew, Asia Raye and Phoenix O’Conner came in as volunteers to help finish the homes. Workshops were held for the volunteers to learn the tools in building a home.

“It’s so empowering to help people and it feels great. I mean, I’ve met so many amazing women and men for that matter,” says Emma.

They are always accepting volunteers but if you are looking for another Women Build Day. The Habit for Humanity has announced that they will have another one of those days in the fall 2020.

The Helena Habitat for Humanity takes in 2020 applications for new homes on a rolling basis.

There are certain requirements. Check out the Habitat for Humanity web page to learn more about the program.
