April is the Month of the Military Child and one Great Falls school celebrated them on Friday.

Families at Loy Elementary School enjoyed donuts and refreshments before their children headed off to class.

Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen was there to help with the celebration.

Loy has the highest population of students who have connections to the military; an estimated one in ten children in the state of Montana have a parent serving in the military.

"These children are special. They are important. It is because their parents move and transfer in and out. It is the children that we look to and say ‘go to the front of the line.’ They go there because we know that they are important. They move, they transfer, so education…is not just education, it’s in sports, and it’s in anything. It is saying that they are a priority,” Arntzen said.

Families were also asked to wear purple on Friday for "Purple Up Day" which celebrates military families across the country.
