The parent company of retailer Herberger’s announced on Wednesday that it is "winding down operations."

Shane Etzwiler, the president of the Great Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, says he believes losing Herberger’s is going to hurt the Great Falls community.

Etzwiler says he has been keeping a close eye on what was happening with Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., the parent company of Herberger’s that filed for bankruptcy recently.

Etzwiler is the former manager of Holiday Village Mall manager, and also worked at Herberger’s.

He says losing the store would affect about 80 employees.

Etzwiler says Herberger’s was also a big draw for people coming to Great Falls, from Helena to Canada.

Although Herberger’s is attached to the mall, the store and the property are not owned by the same company that owns the mall.

Etzwiler noted, "It is going to have an impact on mall traffic as well. Though sometimes some of the anchor stores lease from the mall and some own their own building, this is the case with Herberger’s. That probably won’t affect (the mall) as far as a financial perspective, (but) it will affect it from mall traffic. Herberger’s was such a great draw."

Herberger’s has not yet announced a closing date.

(APRIL 18, 2018) Bon-Ton, the parent company of retailer Herberger’s, announced that it is "winding down operations" after declaring bankruptcy.

In a press release, the company said: "Bon-Ton will move forward in a constructive manner to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact of this development on our associates, customers, vendors and the communities we serve."

There are several Herberger’s stores in Montana – in Holiday Village Mall in Great Falls, and in Havre, Butte, Kalispell, Missoula, and Billings.

We have received several reports that employees of the Herberger’s store in Great Falls were notified on Tuesday of the likely closure of the store; no date has been announced at this point.

KRTV called the Herberger’s store in Holiday Village Mall on Wednesday morning; when our reporter asked if the store is closing, the employee hung up.

The last "anchor" store to close at Holiday Village Mall was Sears; the space it occupied is now the location of PetSmart and Hobby Lobby.
