The C.M. Russell Museum held a private viewing party this afternoon to unveil one of Charlie Russell’s paintings.
“Death of a Gambler” has been locked away for over a decade. A private collector has had it in their possession and has kept it in a crate for all this time.
"This is one of the fun parts of art and I think for art collectors,” C.M. Russell Museum Executive Director Tom Figarelle said.
The painting was painted in 1904, while Charlie and his wife were visiting NYC. It can be interpreted in many different ways but one unique aspect of the painting is a faint ghost that lies in the middle of the painting.
“There’s some pieces like this one, "Death of a Gambler", that just get into private collections and they don’t see the light of day for a number of years,” Figarelle said.
The painting will be on display in May.
