First responders have temporarily called off the search for a woman who went into the Missouri River on Monday.

The call came in at about 8:45 a.m. for a woman who was spotted in the Missouri River west of the Black Eagle Dam.

According to Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards, dam workers saw the woman coming toward the dam.

The dam workers said they tried to help the woman but the current was just too strong.

They say the woman went through dam.

Sheriff Edwards says that the operation began as a rescue, but due to water levels and temperatures, it is now considered a recovery operation.

Edwards says they called off the recovery efforts at about 3 p.m. due to the water conditions getting too dangerous for rescuers.

They still do not know the woman’s identity, or why or how she entered the river.

They will keep searching the area east of the Black Eagle Dam for the woman’s body.

(1st Report, 9:26 a.m.) Search and rescue personnel responded to a report of a person in the Missouri River on Monday morning.

Responding agencies include Great Falls Fire Rescue, Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, Black Eagle Volunteer Fire Department, and Great Falls Emergency Services.

The search activity is concentrated along the stretch of the river between the 15th Street Bridge and Black Eagle Dam, focused primarily near the dam.

At least one SAR boat is in the water, and emergency personnel can be seen walking along the top of the dam.

We have a reporter at the scene and will update you as we get more information.
