(HELENA) William Paul Cox, Jr, a 35-year-old Helena resident, was sentenced on Thursday to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Cox was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles Lovell.

Court documents state that on April 4, 2016, Cox was arrested in Helena on outstanding warrants.

The Missouri River Drug Task Force searched Cox’s vehicle pursuant to a warrant, and found a loaded .40 caliber, semi-automatic pistol in the suburban.

Two days later, Cox asked a friend to get a green bag out of the back of the suburban because it contained personal items.  He told the friend to leave the red bag in the speaker box because it contained a “boom boom.”

Cox described the location to the MRDTF where they found the loaded .40 caliber pistol.

In 2005, Cox was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to 40 months imprisonment.

(APRIL 4, 2016) William Paul Cox Jr. of East Helena has been charged with five felonies following a weekend arrest.

Cox is accused of breaking into a construction site on Old Iron Drive on Friday, April 1st, and stealing more than $7,000 worth of building materials and tools.

Cox’s vehicle was found in East Helena on Saturday.

After obtaining a search warrant, Sheriff’s deputies recovered some of the stolen material.

Cox was spotted Sunday by a neighbor.

After questioning by law enforcement officers, Cox was arrested, and found to be in possession of seven grams of methamphetamine.

He has been charged with three counts of felony burglary, one count of felony theft, and felony drug possession.

In Justice Court on Monday morning, Cox denied the charges.

His criminal record dates back to 2002, including felony theft, burglary, and firearms violations.

Bond for Cox was set at $75,000.
