The 4H Food Festival took place on Monday with three separate events for students to show off their cooking skills.
One of the events was the Stir-Up Challenge.
“It’s kind of like Chopped on the Food Network,” said Jerrica Seilstad, 4H and Youth Development agent. “A big piece of it is not only being able to understand nutrition and prepare a meal, but also to do it in a safe manner."
Contestants had one hour to put together a dish using poultry, five special ingredients, and one secret ingredient.
There was also a live cake decoration and a food art contest where the kids were proud to show off their creations.
“Well usually I really like a bear because my name is Bayard. I’m most looking forward to…about eating it,” said Bayard Connell, a 7-year-old food artist.
But while they’re baking or cooking, they’re also learning.
“Sometimes it doesn’t always connect. When you talk about math and science, they sit down there and they’ve got equations and they’re trying to work on it and it just doesn’t click for them,” said Seilstad. “Then you put them in a kitchen and now all of a sudden, they’re learning fractions and learning measurements and being able to time things.”
The team that wins the Stir-Up Challenge will go to Bozeman to compete.
That winner will then go to Atlanta.
