Zoning Board of Adjustment applicants have more time to file

The Board of Cascade County Commissioners announced on April 13 that beginning on April 16 it would begin accepting applications to fill one vacancy on the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBOA).

That vacancy announcement specified a closing date of May 1.

A press release from the County Attorney’s office says that in order to provide a minimum of one month’s notice of the vacancy, the Board of County Commissioners has extended the application deadline through 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4.

The five members of the Zoning Board of Adjustment are appointed by the County Commissioners to a two-year term and serve without compensation.

Every attempt is made to stagger those terms. The ZBOA has exclusive power and authority to independently hear and decide zoning appeals and applications for zoning variances and special exceptions (Special Use Permits).

Previously, the Cascade County Commissioners had advertised the ZBOA vacancy with specific qualifying requirements. Those requirements were intended to ensure an impartial and unbiased candidate pool, whose members are likely to be rendering a decision on the Madison Food Park proposal sometime in the future.

County Commissioner Jane Weber said, “At the April 10, 2018 Commission meeting, the Commissioners voted to re-advertise for the one opening on the Zoning Board of Adjustments without any conditions.”

She added, “It will be the Commissioners’ duty to then select the best qualified applicant to serve on this important decision-making board.”

Applications for the one vacancy on the ZBOA are available on-line at www.cascadecountymt.gov or can be picked up at the County Commission office.

Applications must be hand-delivered to the Cascade County Commission office in the Courthouse Annex at 325 2nd Avenue North by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2018.

The Commissioners anticipate making this appointment at their regularly scheduled Commission meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12.

All applications received following the April 13 vacancy announcement will be retained by the Commissioners for their consideration at the June 12 meeting.

For additional information about the ZBOA appointment, please contact the County Attorney’s Office at 454-6915 and ask for Deputy County Attorney Carey Ann Haight.

Friesen acquired approximately 3,018 acres of undeveloped real estate located about 8.3 miles southeast of Great Falls. The project will include a processing plant for cattle, pigs, and chickens, and the related further processing facilities for beef, pork, and poultry.

The project will also incorporate facilities for the processing of milk, supplied by local and regional dairy producers into a variety of cheese products; and a distillery which will source the grain necessary for the production of Montana-branded spirits from cereal crops grown in the region.

Developers expect that when the project is fully operational, it will directly create about 3,075 jobs, along with as many as 85 supporting jobs in the surrounding community
