Edward Conning, 66, of Cody, Wyoming, has been identified as the man who drowned while kayaking on Rock Creek in Carbon County on Sunday afternoon.
According to Red Lodge Fire Chief Tom Koontz, Conning was kayaking about 10 miles south of Red Lodge when he experienced some trouble and his kayak overturned.
He was stuck under the kayak for more than 10 minutes, which is where he is believed to have drowned.
He then traveled down the river until he was caught on a submerged tree.
Koontz said Conning was an experienced kayaker.
About 25 rescuers responded from Red Lodge Fire Rescue to recover the man’s body, along with assistance from the sheriff’s department and veteran kayakers.
