Last month, the Jesse Slaughter campaign filed a complaint against Cascade County Sheriff Bob Edwards’ campaign for not advising Slaughter before posting negative advertisements.
The Commissioner of Political Practices found Edwards in violation of Montana campaign laws and also found that fines are justified.
Because the complaint took place in Cascade County, the decision was left to Cascade County Attorney Josh Racki, who decided not to prosecute.
Racki said the Slaughter campaign asked his office to not impose a fine in the case.
The complaint will now return to the Commissioner of Political Practices for evaluation.
The Slaughter campaign told Racki they believe the violation was an honest mistake and Edwards quickly made efforts to comply.
Slaughter defeated Edwards in last Tuesday’s primary to become the democratic candidate for the Cascade County Sheriff’s race.
