Stabbing suspect has convictions in Missoula and Great Falls

Posted

One of the suspects involved in a Monday evening Missoula stabbing was previously convicted of kidnapping and beating a man.

Christopher Newrider, 31, was convicted of kidnapping and assault in 2008 in Missoula County for tying up a gay man and severely beating him. Newrider was also convicted of burglary in Cascade County in 2006.

State prison records also show that Newrider was on probation at the time of Monday’s stabbing.

He was expected to appear in Missoula Justice Court on Wednesday for the stabbing incident, which happened in the 1800 block of Sherwood Street.

The victim had accused Newrider and Valerie Thompson of stealing items. The disagreement escalated and the two suspects allegedly stabbed the victim.

The 38-year-old victim was taken to the hospital where he’s recovering from multiple stab wounds.

Newrider and Thompson fled the scene, but were later found by police at a downtown Missoula hotel.

(July 10, 2018) Two people have been arrested after being accused of stabbing a man after a Monday evening fight on Missoula’s northside.

The suspects are identified as  Christopher Newrider and Valerie Thompson.

Missoula Police Department spokesman Sgt. Travis Welsh told MTN News that officers responded to a home in the 1800 block of Sherwood Street shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday.

Police found that a 38-year-old man had been stabbed several times.

Police say the man was conscious and alert when he was taken to a hospital. There’s no further word on the victim’s condition. Police are also investigating a possible second victim who was not injured in the stabbing.

The victim accused the Newrider and Thompson of stealing items from him; the disagreement then escalated and the two suspects allegedly stabbed the victim.

Both of the suspects then left the scene, and Newrider was found a short time later near a downtown motel. Thompson was also found at that location, according to police.

Newrider and Thompson are both in custody at the Missoula County Detention Center and are expected to make their initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon in Missoula Justice Court.

Missoula police are continuing to investigate the stabbing.
