Kids of all ages tested their hunting skills at the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park on Sunday.
The event was part of Park’s annual Mammoth Hunt, which allows people to try out weapons that date back over thousands of years.
The oldest weapon, and the most popular, is the atlatl—predating the bow and arrow. It’s a 10,000-year-old weapon.
One park ranger said these types of events are helpful to get the community learn about different cultures.
“We hold these events just to bring people out, to experience different cultures and just, you know, enjoy state parks," Alice Southworth said. "Montana State Parks are the people’s parks. It’s all about getting them out and enjoying things. The more activities you have, the longer they’ll stay and enjoy themselves."
There was also tomahawk throwing and bow and arrow shooting.
First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park’s next event is the Little Shell Chippewa Pow Wow on August 25.
