Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will lift the afternoon and evening fishing restrictions on a section of the Sun River on August 24 due to recent cooler water temperatures.

The "hoot owl" closures were implemented in early August and affected the Sun River from the Highway 287 bridge near Augusta to the mouth of Muddy Creek west of Great Falls.

Fishing was not allowed from 2 p.m. to midnight daily.

The restrictions will be officially lifted at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 24.

According to FWP, a stream may be reopened if water temperatures do not exceed 70 degrees for three consecutive days.

FWP fisheries biologist Jason Mullen said water temperatures on the Sun River at Simms were less than 70 degrees from August 18-20.

You can visit the Fish, Wildlife and Parks website for more information on emergency angling restrictions.
