GREAT FALLS — Jerel Edgar Johnson of Harlem was sentenced in federal court in Great Falls on Thursday after being convicted on domestic abuse charges.

U.S. District Judge Brian Morris sentenced Johnson to 21 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme said in a press release.

Johnson, 35 years old, pleaded guilty in June to domestic abuse by a habitual offender.

The prosecution said in court records that Johnson assaulted the victim twice in June 2018 near Snake Butte on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Johnson had been convicted of at least two prior domestic assaults in tribal court.

After the most recent assault, the victim went to receive medical treatment for her injuries and reported the abuse. She said that Johnson had hit, kneed, slapped, and choked her.

The sentencing also recommended that Johnson undergo a 500-hour residential drug and alcohol program and receive intensive mental health treatment.
