(GREAT FALLS) The Great Falls Community Ice Foundation needs your help.
“Every summer we try to have a big day where we try to get as much as we can possibly done as far as maintenance,” secretary Lexi Stober said.
On Saturday, the Foundation is hosting a volunteer day. All are welcomed and should be ready to move sand, re-pallet the old boards and glass, swap out laces on skates and much more.
“Things like that are what keeps us alive,” Stober said.
The foundation is also running a fundraising event. They’re calling it ‘Bucks for Boards.’
The foundation has already put $50,000 out to cover the cost of the boards that will line the rink.
“$50,000 is a lot of money to come up with when you are running on a budget that is pretty tight. We try to keep the cost of things up here as low as we possibly can because hockey and figure skating are already expensive sports. The cheapest we can keep our ice, the better it is for each of our user groups,” Stober said.
Stober has been a part of the ice community for years. She says her passion for the rink comes from her kids.
“I have two little boys who play hockey. When I first came to this rink I was a little sad thinking it needed a lot of work. Knowing that it’s all volunteer and donation driven, if I think it needs work, I better be willing to make it happen,” Stober said.
Stober says even if you are not an ice user, the rink is a huge benefit to the community.
“I just think that the ice rink is a worthy cause in a community like ours. We have a really long winter. It gives all of our kids in the community somewhere to go, something to do. I just think that if people came up here and saw what the volunteers and all the donations are going towards and what we are actually doing up here, I think more people would get involved,” Stober said.
Volunteer day starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 20. They ask that you bring work gloves, rakes, shovels, drills, wheelbarrows and anything that could be a help. Lunch will be provided.
