GREAT FALLS — The University of Providence and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are hosting a free event called Pastors & Counselors Training Program - Military Culture and Wounds of War

The event will be for clergy members who want training on how to help veterans overcome abandoning their religious beliefs. They will also learn methods of connecting to veterans and walk with them through the healing process of forgiveness.

The schools chair of Veterans Resources, Steve Lynch, said, “The veterans coming home, 70% of combat veterans who come home leave their faith because they are challenged with their experiences at war and how to integrate that with their faith, sometimes that’s a conflict.”

There are four presentations religious officials can sign up for including:

  1. Military Culture and The Wounds of War- This session provides an overview of military culture with an emphasis on its conflict with civilian culture.
  1. Pastoral Care with Veterans and Their Families- This session involves a discussion of the fundamentals of Pastoral Care with attention given to the definition of “Spirituality” in relation to the development of meaning and purpose in life.
  1. Mental Health Services and Referrals- This session is designed to provide community clergy with an overview of mental health services available in many rural communities.
  1. Building Community Partnerships- Local communities are often the most important and most neglected resources for reintegration of our returning service members.

The event will be held at the University of Providence next Wednesday from 9-4 pm in the University Center 2nd Floor
