GREAT FALLS — Blackfeet Community College is starting a new class in response to the pandemic. The free online course will teach people about the Blackfeet Tribe’s language and will be split into two six.-week sessions. The program is being funded by a grant.

With so many losses on the reservation due to COVID-19 and tribal elders being at risk, the college decided to start the class.

"It's a really critical time right now for the Blackfeet Nation and making sure that we're working to preserve and revitalize some of these traditional teachings and the language,” said Karla Bird, Blackfeet Community College president.

The class will be offered free to the community; these courses are being offered for community education and not for course credit, according to the school.

They hope to get the class started in February. When registration opens, an announcement will be made on the college’s Facebook page.

Dr. Bird told MTN News that the classes will be offered online.
