MISSOULA — A man was taken to a hospital after falling through the ice on a lake in the Mission Valley on Monday night.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell says that at 10:45 p.m. Lake County 911 took a report of a man who had fallen through the ice on McDonald Lake.

A Sheriff's deputy and a Flathead Tribal police officer found the man on the south side of the lake; he had "self-rescued" and a friend was rendering first aid.

The man had fallen in the lake an hour prior to the report and had to break though a length of about 50 to 75 feet of ice in order to reach the shore, according to Sheriff Bell.

When the officers found him, he was unable to walk and was in a hypothermic state.

Sheriff Bell says the officers carried him about ½ mile to awaiting EMS and Mission Fire units who then took him to a hospital.

No other details have been released.
