GREAT FALLS — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is soliciting public comments on a proposal to reconstruct short sections of MT 44 between US 89 and the town of Valier.

The project would begin about four miles east of the junction of US 89 and MT 44, and extend for 6.2 miles ending 0.2 miles west of the intersection of MT 44 and Francis Heights Road and 3.1 miles west of Valier.

The purpose of the project is to address substandard subgrade and pavement conditions in spot locations to improve roadway performance and condition. Proposed work includes digouts, surfacing, earthwork, and finishing with a seal and cover (chip seal) and upgraded pavement markings at 5 locations along the route.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2023 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. No new right-of-way is anticipated. Relocation of utilities may be required. MDT staff will contact all affected landowners prior to doing survey work on their land. Staff will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.
