KALISPELL — One woman and seven dogs died in a house fire in Libby on Sunday.

Libby Fire Marshall Steve Lauer says emergency crews responded to the fire at around 4 p.m. in Kootenai Vista Trailer Court off of Kootenai River Road.

Lauer says a neighbor noticed the door to the mobile home was open and attempted to enter the home to help. Lauer said the flames and smoke were so heavy the neighbor couldn’t enter the home.

Lauer told MTN News that when crews arrived at the scene about 25% of the mobile home was engulfed in flames.

An engine crew attempted to enter the home through the front door but the fire had burned large holes into the floor so they couldn’t enter.

Lauer says crews were able to get into the home through another entrance toward the back of the structure to search for a potential occupant but were unable to find anyone.

It took about 90 minutes for firefighters to knock down the fire and the victim was later found in the kitchen area.

Lauer says the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The name of the woman who died has not yet been released; we will update you if we get more information.
