A small earthquake occurred just north of Great Falls on Friday, September 18, 2026. This is the first earthquake in several months since a series of earthquakes occurred earlier this year.
It happened at 7:40 a.m. and was centered about 3.1 miles northwest of Black Eagle.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it registered as a 3.6 magnitude earthquake at a depth of about 17.2 miles.
A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shook the region on Thursday, January 29, 2026. It was followed by a smaller quake of 2.7 later that evening, a 3.2 on January 31, a 3.7 on February 12, and a 2.8 on February 26.
The four smaller quakes - and probably the one today - were aftershocks of the larger initial quake.
There have been no injuries, no serious damage, and no impacts on infrastructure reported in any of the incidents.
