Emergency crews are working to extinguish a hay fire that is slowing traffic several miles wests of Vaughn this afternoon.

The incident was reported just after one o'clock near the Indian Hammer veterinary clinic on US Highway 89.

According to Vaughn Fire Chief Jason McAllister, a tractor hauling hay caught fire; the driver was able to get the tractor disconnected.

No one was injured in the fire.

In addition to Vaughn, crews from Sun River, Sun Prairie, Simms, and the Montana Department of Transportation also assisted.

Traffic is slowed to one lane on each side of the highway near the fire; thick smoke is limiting visibility in some areas.

McAllister said because of the amount of hay on the trailer, the fire could burn for several hours and asked people to avoid the area if possible.
