BOZEMAN — Jakob Steven Lundberg is accused of killing Sidney Callaghan, 29 years old, after an altercation outside the Rocking R Bar in Bozeman early on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Lundberg, 22, was seen in Gallatin County Justice Court on Tuesday.

Suspect charged with homicide after Bozeman shooting

According to charging documents, a fight inside the bar involved Lundberg and Callaghan. The two men were escorted outside by bar staff, where the fight continued.

At some point, Lundberg went to his vehicle and returned with a firearm and shot Callaghan several times.

Court documents state that Lundberg fired at Callaghan while he was surrounded by numerous other people on the sidewalk and inside the bar.

Lundberg then fled the scene in a Subaru WRX, while Callaghan was taken to Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Lundberg was apprehended in his vehicle on North Seventh Avenue near Walmart and was taken into custody An empty holster was fastened to the driver's door.

During an interview with detectives, Lundberg reportedly expressed regret for what he had done. Detectives told him about the Memorial Day parade set to begin in a few hours, and it would be a public safety risk if the firearm wasn't located,

Lundberg told officers that he had thrown the gun from his vehicle west of Rouse and north of Main near a white van. As of Tuesday morning, the gun has not been found.

He also reportedly told detectives he called his father and confessed to the shooting.

Video surveillance from the Rocking R Bar corroborated witness statements that a fight took place inside the bar and spilled onto the sidewalk outside.

Lundberg was allegedly seen leaving the altercation and returning moments later, and then seen shooting Callaghan, who falls to the ground.

It was learned that Lundberg's father was contacted by his son, who then reportedly told law enforcement, saying, "I shot somebody," and that he had made a big mistake.

Lundberg remains held at the Gallatin County Detention Facility. He has been charged with deliberate homicide, criminal endangerment, and tampering with evidence.



(1st REPORT, MAY 25) A man has been arrested after a deadly shooting in Bozeman early on Monday, May 25, 2026.

The Bozeman Police Department said in a news release that officers were dispatched at 12:44 a.m. to a bar on the 200 block of East Main Street for a report of a person who had been shot, and the suspect fled in a vehicle.

Officers began life-saving efforts on the victim, who was taken to Bozeman Health Deaconess and declared dead.

The suspect, a 22-year old man, was quickly found and arrested, and faces a charge of deliberate homicide.

At this point, authorities have not released the name of the victim or the suspect.

Police ask that anyone who witnessed this incident or has information about the shooting to report it to the Bozeman Police Department.
