Waterfowl at Gibson Pond are cute - but still wild

GREAT FALLS — A woman sent KRTV several photos on Monday that show a swan attacking a goose in Gibson Pond. The woman was concerned about the incident and asked if we could get information about it.

We contacted the Great Falls Park & Recreation Department, which is responsible for the pond and some of the birds that reside there.

They responded that these types of occurrence unfortunately may happen between birds, but they are not sure what would cause the swan to single out a particular duck or goose.

Park staff can not control the bird’s natural instincts, they said, but there are isolation measures that they will take if a bird is being too aggressive to other birds or visitors at the park.

They noted: "Although the park is a wonderful location for families and individuals to visit and observe the birds, we still remind everyone that these are wild animals, and to use safe practices when interacting with the wildlife."
