GREAT FALLS — A Lake County Sheriff's deputy was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after sustaining serious burns on Tuesday.

According to Lake County Sheriff Don Bell, the deputy came to the aid of a driver whose vehicle had broken-down in the Ronan area on Highway 93.

While rendering assistance, the carburetor on the vehicle backfired, spewing flames and gasoline onto the deputy, causing second and third-degree burns on his face and hands.

The deputy was hospitalized and later flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for burn treatment.

Sheriff Bell says the deputy has maintained consciousness throughout the ordeal and is in stable condition.

The name of the deputy has not been released at this point.
