U.S. deaths linked to the novel coronavirus have surpassed 200, and more than half of U.S. states have now reported at least one fatality in connection with the virus.
Across the country, more than 19,000 people have been confirmed to have contracted the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University. A total of 147 people have officially recovered from the disease.
As of Friday night, the national death toll from coronavirus stands at 250.
The vast majority of U.S. fatalities have been recorded in Washington state, where early on in its U.S. spread, the virus ravaged a senior center in the Seattle area. At least 74 people have died in connection with the disease in Washington. At least 38 people have died in connection with the disease in New York, and at least 18 people have died in California.

The number of confirmed cases in the United States has exploded over the past week, thanks to increased testing capacity. While emergency declarations by the FDA have greatly increased capacity, there are still reports of sick patients struggling to get tested for the virus.
Throughout the week, Vice President Mike Pence has stressed that coronavirus tests should be prioritized for people with underlying health issues. He's said that people without underlying health issues should remain self-quarantined if presenting coronavirus symptoms — particularly shortness of breath.
