A winter storm is on track to move into Montana Friday through Sunday.

In its wake we can expect heavy snow, periods of gusty winds, and very cold temperatures.

Light snow is falling across parts of North Central Montana Thursday afternoon, but heavier snow is expected to develop by Friday morning.

The snow will then last through Saturday and even into early Sunday.

Widespread heavy snow is expected. The heaviest snow looks to be north of Great Falls, with more than a foot of snow likely.

Great Falls itself is in line for 8 to 14 inches, with 4 to 8 expected for Helena.

Snow will make travel very difficult by Friday night, and conditions will continue to worsen through Saturday.

Winds will gust up to 30 miles per hour along with the snow, so blowing and drifting will create additional problems, including severely reduced visibility.

Temperatures will be dropping quickly too. Most spots will be in the 20s or 30s Friday afternoon and temperatures will drop into the single digits by Saturday, and below zero by Saturday night. Wind chills will be as cold as 30 below zero Saturday.
