April is Occupational Therapy Awareness Month and the staff at Intermountain are hoping to dispel some misconceptions about occupational therapy.

Occupational therapy (OT) is used to improve health and quality of life of an individual through the therapeutic use of everyday activities or occupations.

OT is often used to help people who have disabilities, mental health problems and other various impairments.

The treatments help the individuals participate and engage in every-day activities such as brushing their teeth, putting on their clothes or using their wheelchair without assistance.

Intermountain staff say that we often take for granted our independence in living and while some of these goals may seem small they can make a huge difference in the lives of their clients.

“For a lot of kids, especially kids with multiple serious disabilities, they’re not our only client,” says occupational therapist Jerilyn Lecce, “The client is the family.”

Staff added that a feeling of normalcy is sometimes all the family and children are looking for.

“Everyone we treat we look at what’s important to them and what’s important to their life,” says Lisa Sommers, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

Intermountain will be offering a motor development day camp this summer though their occupational therapy program. ‘Improving By Moving’ will run July 9th-12th and is open to children ages 5-11.
