Residents from Great Falls came out to celebrate the unofficial start of spring at Gibson Park on Friday morning.

About three dozen people came out to watch the waterfowl released back into the Gibson Pond after a long winter in the Honker Hilton.

Children from Anne’s Daycare were here last fall when the waterfowl went to their winter home.

And on Friday they came back out to see them released back into their summer habit.

The owner of the daycare says it’s fun to bring the kids out to experience new things.

(APRIL 11, 2018) The City of Great Falls Park & Recreation Department will be releasing its waterfowl back into Gibson Pond on Friday, April 13.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Park & Recreation staff takes care of the waterfowl during the winter months at their indoor location ("Honker Hilton") at the north end of Gibson Park.

The birds enjoy an indoor pond and are fed daily.

Once they are released into Gibson Pond they are still fed on a daily basis by staff.

The birds are kept inside during the winter for their own safety since many have clipped wings.

The birds will be rounded up for another winter stay at the "Honker Hilton" in October.

The event usually involves a couple of trailers, which are backed up to the pond; when the gate is opened, the birds hop, jump, and sometimes fly into the pond.
