A Great Falls educator’s work was recently highlighted on a national level.

Lincoln Elementary School Principal Jon Konen received the National Distinguished Principal award at the Montana Association of Elementary School Principals state conference this month.

Each year, the award is given out by the NationaAssociation of Elementary Principals and aims to highlight one elementary or middle school principal from each state that sets high standards for student achievement, instruction and creates a learning environment that benefits the community.

Konen says he was humbled to become part of this year’s class of distinguished principals and looks forward to meeting the other 49 awardees in October in Washington D.C. at the 2018 NDP event.

He says his team’s focus and philosophy at Lincoln Elementary has been putting families and relationships first in the classroom.

"I have an outstanding staff that step up and advocate for kids every single day and so when we can make decisions based around trusting relationships first, it helps out with academics for sure," Konen added.

He says the school’s theme this year, "Leader in Me", has resonated with students through several projects including the "Amazing Shake", a national competition that places emphasis on teaching students manners, discipline, respect, and professional conduct.

Konen says he’s already looking forward to next year’s theme, which will be decided by teachers at the school.

Broadwater Elementary School Principal Susan Sweeney was Montana’s 2017 National Distinguished Principal Awardee.
