The first sign of grizzly bears on the Marias River Wildlife Management Area was observed on Saturday.

According to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Prairie Bear Monitor Facebook page, the first grizzly track was discovered off of Lincoln Road.

The track appeared to be from a large male.

Prairie Bear Monitor alerts people across the north-central Montana prairie of bear sightings and conflicts.

When bears first emerge from their winter dens they usually spend several days or weeks near the den sunning themselves. Then they move down in elevation to search for food in lower elevation riparian areas.

People who live on ranches and in communities on the Front should take the normal precautions common each spring: store garbage securely and take down bird feeders.

In addition, recreationists, like shed antler hunters, should carry bear spray.

Residents in Pondera and Teton counties are eligible for an animal carcass removal program to help prevent issues with ranchers.

To have carcasses removed, call 406-595-6689.
