(LINCOLN) Richard Freeland says he had the idea for a fitness and recreation center for the last 22 years but the timing never fit.

He put the idea on the back burner until about two months ago, but then: “I was driving through Lincoln and it was like, ‘Now is the time."

He met with the landlord of the old bank and they worked out an agreement to be able to rent the building at first.

For the last two and a half months, Freeland and his wife have been working hard to get Powerhouse up and running.

“There have been several small attempts through the years but nothing has ever some of it,” Freeland said.

Powerhouse will be a fitness and recreation center that will cover the needs of the community it is serving.

But the primary reason for the center is for the children of Lincoln to have a safe place to hang out.

"They can lift weights in the off season of sports. They can come and do their homework. It’s a safe place, they know it is a no-bullying zone. I’m the bouncer, so they will always be safe,” Freeland said.

Powerhouse will also serve as a place for the women’s groups to be able to do aerobics, self-defense classes, and yoga.

And there will also be time for people to be able to pump some iron in the facility.

Freeland says children from the ages of 12 to 18 can enjoy the center for free.

Powerhouse will open to the public on June 2nd and memberships are $20 a person.
