People laced up their running shoes and grabbed their leashes for the third annual 5k Ruff Run Saturday morning before heading to the sixth annual Pet-A-Palooza.
People could walk or run the more than 3 mile trail with the best friends. It started at Elks Riverside Park, went past West Bank Park across the 9th Street Bridge and back down.
For many, this is how they help the Great Falls Animal Shelter.
“I like coming out and supporting the shelter,” said Coby Herbert, who placed 2nd in the run. “We got our dog from the shelter, so I always like to give back when I can because my wife won’t let me adopt anymore dogs.”
After the race, all dogs and their humans were invited to join a variety of games and treats.
There was a Dunkin’ for Hot Dogs challenge and a peanut butter lick. They also got to test out their smarts with an obstacle course and a doggy limbo.
And while it was fun for the pups, it was educational for their owners.
“You know the first time we came out we got these guys both microchipped and that was something really important to us and I loved that they offered that,” said Collen Marvick, a rescue dog owner. “They gave us helpful information on vaccines, areas that we could take them if we needed anything. You know a lot of it is just information gathering, finding out about places in the community that may need help like the Pet Paw-See or the Pittie Committee.”
Pup parents could learn how to give their dog CPR, as well as how to train them. There was also a dog bite prevention seminar offered.
All proceeds raised from both events will go into the HUG project at Great Falls Animal Shelter. The project will help the shelter expand.
